Someone is talking… ah I wish they would shut up!…. oh their voice is annoying…blah bla blah blah blah… Micah sighed and started to roll over… ahh! ok… bad pain left arm for some reason! what is up with that arm? can’t move it…probably should look down to see… uh.. hold on… can’t seem to open my eyes! what is going on? come on eyes open!… ok a little flutter.. why is everything so hard? I feel like I am dreaming! man I am thirsty.. where am I at anyway? and who will not stop talking?
Abel was sprawled out in the hospital chair, trucker cap draped over his face. he had just about watched enough infomercials to make him go completely insane. Under the hat he waggled his face and mocked the sales people… “this deal is a one of a kind! and we only have 100 left… call now and buy three and we will double your order!.. blah bla blah blah blah…
Abel noticed some motion from micah and jumped up… “hey buddy! How you feeling? That was a pretty nasty crack you got on your noggin man! You really oughta think twice about arguing with the police.. haven’t you ever watched COPS? you always lose man… always! “
“Shut up Abel, let him wake up!” a slim girl hurried forward and pushed Abel back… “hey…micah..its me Katie ” she whispered… “can I get you anything?”
Micah strained to just get one eye open… why was everything so hard? he tried to speak but his tongue felt like a big dried apricot, and was about as useful for speaking. He managed a lame.. “wha icc com ong”
“just take your time sweetie… no rush…” Kate reassured him as she brought a cup of water to his mouth.
Micah slurped a few sips and laid back. The tongue seemed to be coming back online slowly and he tried again… “what is going on…. where am I?”
“well what is going on… you are waking up from a bad concussion… and.. you are in the hospital.” replied the Kate softly. “
Micah nodded… for now he would have to take her word for it… cause his head definitely hurt like he had a concussion. Still.. it seemed she was very vague in her answers to him. He tried to step backwards and remember how he ended up in this shape… ok.. woke up… went to work… did anything happen at work? no.. just a wierd arguement with carlos… CARLOS! it all came rushing back to him in an instant. and he sat straight up.
Kate quickly grabbed his shoulders ” Abel get over here! NOW! Micah… its ok sweetie… just relax…”
Micah was rigid and panicked “Carlos… ” he weakly begged… “is Carlos ok?”
Abel came around to the other side of the hospital bed and put his arm around Micah… no buddy… I’m sorry… he didn’t make it” Tears filled his eyes.
Micah shook his head… trying to process… “but… but.. ” he searched Abel’s face for a shred of hope… but there was none
“no… man… I know… I know..” Abel held him…close… as the sobs rose and fell like the pounding of a merciless sledge hammer.
Kate held Micah’s limp hands as Abel held up his brother… she knew every heart rending sob that escaped his lips felt like an explosion in his swollen head. And yet he would continue to sob. The tears came as she watched Micah’s eyes paint a vivid picture of the impossibility of the physical and emotional pain that he was suffering. She closed her eyes and prayed for mercy…
a nurse rushed in “I’m sorry I came as soon as I could… ” she quickly emptied a syringe into Micah’s IV. “you told him?” she queried disapprovingly…
“We had to… he asked” answered Abel still supporting his brother
Micah relaxed as the meds quickly took the edge off… he laid back and drifted off to sleep.
the nursed shooed Kate and Abel out of the room.
“Do you think he will be ok now?” Abel stared through the glass at Micah.
“It’s hard to say Abel” Kate answered. “I mean, he watched his friend get hit by a truck and die! Abel you should have seen him when he came in here.. he was covered in Carlos’ blood… I thought he was another accident victim!
Abel just stood looking off into space…” I can’t imagine… just can’t…” he choked back a sob.
“When will your parents get in” Kate quickly changed the subject.
“They should be here in 2 hours” Abel glanced at his watch. ” is your shift up?”
“Yes, they let me off when I told them Micah was a friend.” Kate put her face in her hands
“Come on Kate.. It’s ok..” Abel stood awkwardly… wondering whether to offer a shoulder or not.
Kate composed herself quickly. “well should we grab some coffee?” she feigned a smile
“Sure!” Abel welcomed a change of venue. “So you said you are the ER receptionist?” Abel looked at her quizzically
“Triage!” Kate playfully scowled at Abel…”I already told you! they are not the same thing!”
Abel and Kate headed towards the cafeteria.
