Interesting sidebar to your article is the thot you hit on: getting folks to think for themselves , and I would add, while humbly staying open to input from the outside, esp. outside of whatever 'box' we are used to. This is a struggle in ev. circles, because using our brains is not always seen as a God honoring excercise (go figure), and sometimes the "get under submission" card is played if our thoughts don't jive with what's playing on the leader's channel. Big issue, here. Also the issue of allowing one big, fat, sermon a week be all the meal we need: this is , for many, the de facto setting.....and a great way to starve yourself (while not knowing why you are so da^&*& hungry...).

Do a post sometime on the christian virtue of learning to feed yourself (with the help of the ENTIRE body of Christ). That would be a great post.

OK...the coffee has REALLY kicked in....end of rant.

It will stop, I'm GUESSING, when these brothers and sisters get a better grasp of God's bigger, broader, plans, specifically the KINDGDOM of GOD. Much of what is taught on this, IMO , is just crap. Maybe start with George Eldon Ladd and get a solid theology of what GOD has been up to for millenia. The trick is to teach truth in the midst of so much nonsense, posing as "the fight that must be won or else.....". While keeping your sanity, or what's left of it.

Craziness in this area has had, and still has in most places, the big stage and the bright lights. Stay cool, God is not anxious.

And eat some okra......

Greg,
I know at some point I have to get tired of being bummed out that people would rather recite worn out cliche's rather than think for themselves... but it really gets old that my brothers and sisters are truly convinced that America has garnered some supernatural umbrella of protection and divine approval. Arrrgh when will it stop!?

Glad that Boone's article wasn't any longer than it was. Yup, lots of 'filler' in there: did you notice the transition he made between 70% of americans SELF-IDENTIFYING as "christian" and then later making the bald statement of america being 70% christian. These are two RADICALLY different statements. Does Pat B. for ONE SECOND really believe that we are 70% christian ?? I'm going to guess here that it all depends on which sermon he is currently preaching....... At any rate, that stat is a (very bad) joke.

Also, I much prefer Martin Luther's quote (at least commonly attributed to Luther....someone correct me if this is wrong):

"I would rather be ruled by a competent Turk [unbeliever], than by an incompetent believer." I like the quote , no matter who said it, and I think it was Luther. And the fuss about Romney was.....???

MOre later,

I'll post something longer a little later on this , but one of the key errors in what Mr. Boone said is his stance on GOD having ANY nation being "HIS nation..." , including us. Folks, they are ALL HIS nations, EQUALLY. That doesn't mean that some do indeed have, and follow imperfectly, some judeo-christian values: yes, we have that blessing here, that does not make us any more "HIS" than Saudi Arabia, or North Korea. If you drink this Kool-Aid, MANY strange ideas will necessarily follow.

More on this later. Let's get gospel and Kingdom centered, brothers/sisters. And the Kingdom covers a LOT of ground.

Wayne, Thanks for the comment, I would have to say that you are entirely right about my generalizations, however those that do not fit the generalization know who they are in this case... The big problem here is that we continue to overlook this type of behavior in our brothers and sisters that claim the same "Christian Ideals" I am definitely an advocate of extending grace to everyone, however I have absolutely no patience with todays equivalent of the Pharisees. I think we put too much emphasis on the word "Christian" these days thinking that it groups us with a broad community of similarly agreeing "Christ Followers" But the word is far removed from it's origins almost as far removed as the word "GAY" is from meaning "happy"; and there is more of a chance these days that we are grouping ourselves with a socio-political group that is known for their bigotry; very much like the Pharisees that Jesus constantly contended with.

I, like you have many friends are people that are head over heels in love with Jesus, The disturbing thing here is that recently some of these friends have decided that jumping on the bandwagon of political activism is something that Jesus would endorse... and they are proliferating absurd, distorted views... that can only be defined as propaganda. Ultimately while my generalizations may be a bit unfair, The problem is that a good majority of "Christian" leaders are either involved or encourage this type of behavior... and my generalizations are only to give others pause to think what they might be associating themselves with...

In the end Grace covers us all, including the misbehaving... but I am not one to remain silent while many march into a new era of "Crusades" only to darken the stain on the world; of regretful things done in the name of Christ.

Jason- On this one I think there are generalizations that are unfair. It's like saying "women are..." or "men are...". It doesn't fit me and many of my friends are just head over heels in love with Jesus and want Him to be the centerpiece of their lives. I agree that SOME christians have misrepresented who Jesus is, and who we are as christians. But, we cannot throw out the baby with the bath water. We must pray and pray some more that those misrepresenting Jesus and our faith will see the light and come back to Him.
