The imonk and I
// August 17th, 2009 // My Favorites
My new buddy Greg Rice turned me onto www.internetmonk.com and boy what a find! imonk definitely has my attention. It is always nice to bump into someone that sees things similarly, it makes you feel less… crazy!
So far I have read a few articles and will start you off with some serious reading… go check these two articles out.
Signs I am Weary of Weird Christians

Jason: glad that I was able to play “Andrew” in pointing you to the Monk…..he can get a little cranky, but he loves the ENTIRE body of christ, his goals are shaped by the Kingdom, and his writing style is what I’m (sort of) shooting for. It’s a bonus that he’s righteously funny.
as time permits, be sure and check out “The Coming Evangelical Disaster”….this series caused quite a stir, and is still got a lot of folks’ attention. Would make a great adult sunday school series, IMO, if packaged right.
lets get together sometime and I’ll share some of my favorite archives with ya
another good web site (maybe you already go here): What I learned Today; it’s by Billy Coffey (I think); a little hayseedish, but very good.
Joy abounding to you’se
Greg
Glad to play middle man for the Monk, BUT….if you start talking with other believers and go down some of the Monk’s train of thot (not that they are unique to him, they’re not) you can expect some trrrrubble: I was with a group of very nice believers last night and calmly floated one of the ideas prevalent in “Coming Ev. Collapse”: that we are fighting culture wars ad nauseum while the world 1)yawns 2) makes our religion a caricature, or rather notices the caricature that we’ve bought into hook line and sinker. I also reminded my co-studiers that we are a minority in our society and we are getting smaller, not bigger (sorry, James Dobson….)
AWKWARD silence and the crowd was admiring the eye bulging out of my forehead…..
so I thot a little heads up was in order for ya
keep majoring in the majors, dude
Greg R
Greg, I am pretty accustomed to being the only guy in the room with a third eye
I love the “awkward silence” moments… and they are great for finishing a random thought that just came to mind.
way to go on bringing up questions in study. Wait till a leader pulls you aside and “mentors” you not to discuss “controversial ideals” anymore and stick to the material. Honestly I can understand their point… most people can’t get their head out of their religion long enough to think for themselves. thus the awkward silence while they wonder why you were speaking in a different language!
a new friend of mine, Geoffrey D, whom I met on SHELFARI, introduced me to smallgroups.com: WOW: there’s a LOT of great stuff out there for those whose ministries touch on community building; what a FEAST. and lots of John Ortberg….yummmmm. any other suggestions for on-line small group/community tools ??
I will have to check that out! http://smallgroups.com go look at it people!
OH: ps: if you look for me on SHELFARI, my ‘identity’ is gregornotthemonk….thanks. and anything I have you’d like to borrow, just let me know.
G-daddy
I used to read alot… not so much these days … probably ought to pick it up again.. last book was “The Barbarian Way” if that says anything!.. As a rule I don’t borrow… because i have dispose-alls for kids.. 3 of em… and I cannot return things in the same state… or dimension, or reality that it was originally in. Thus I avoid borrowing because giving something back that closely resembles a 3 month old dug up rawhide bone and explaining how it got that way… is a little embarrasing… partly because I have no idea how it got that way… and partly because I can’t accurately place the blame on who dunnit!
An old farmer went to the city one weekend and attended the big city church. He came home and his wife asked him how it was. “Well,” said the farmer, “it was good. They did something different, however. They sang praise choruses instead of hymns.”
“Praise choruses?” said his wife. “What are those?”
“Oh, they’re OK. They are sort of like hymns, only different,” said the farmer.
“Well, what’s the difference?” asked his wife.
The farmer said, “Well, it’s like this – If I were to say to you “Martha, the cows are in the corn”’ – well, that would be a hymn. If on the other hand, I were to say to you:
Martha, Martha, Martha, Oh Martha, MARTHA, MARTHA, the cows, the big cows, the brown cows, the black cows, the white cows, the black and white cows, the COWS, COWS, COWS are in the corn, are in the corn, are in the corn, are in the corn, the CORN, CORN, CORN.
Then, if I were to repeat the whole thing two or three times, well, that would be a praise chorus.”
The next weekend, his nephew, a young, new Christian from the city came to visit and attended the local church of the small town. He went home and his wife asked him how it was. “Well,” said the young man, “it was good. They did something different however. They sang hymns instead of regular songs.” “Hymns?” asked his wife. “What are those?” “Oh, they’re OK. They are sort of like regular songs, only different,” said the young man.“Well, what’s the difference?”
The young man said, “Well, it’s like this – If I were to say to you ‘Martha, the cows are in the corn’ – well, that would be a regular song. If on the other hand, I were to say to you:
‘Oh Martha, dear Martha, hear thou my cry Inclinest thine ear to the words of my mouth
Turn thou thy whole wondrous ear by and by To the righteous, inimitable, glorious truth.
‘For the way of the animals who can explain There in their heads is no shadow of sense Hearkenest they in God’s sun or His rain Unless from the mild, tempting corn they are fenced.
‘Yea those cows in glad bovine, rebellious delight Have broke free their shackles, their warm pens eschewed Then goaded by minions of darkness and night They all my mild Chilliwack sweet corn have chewed.
‘So look to the bright shining day by and by Where all foul corruptions of earth are reborn Where no vicious animals make my soul cry And I no longer see those foul cows in the corn.’
Then if I were to do only verses one, three and four and do a key change on the last verse, well that would be a hymn. HA! HA! HA!
this was shamelessly stolen from the Mockingbird.blog which you MUST check out (I found it thru the I-Monk…he knows a LOT of peeps. the above is from the aug. 5 entry in the blog. enjoy.
dude this is outrageously funny and the mockingbird is next on my list to visit! i forwarded this to my boss and we talked about it for about 15 mins!… thanks!
I read Michael’s essay on psychology and christianity, can they mix ?? I think it’s called “Sigmuend’s Last Laugh” or something like that. I recommend that one also. Had I read it in 1992, I wouldn’t have majored in psych in 93,94, and 95.
The summer stretches on: hope GOD”s grace finds you and lifts you up.
Your friend in Christ

Dude: if you think your stomach can take it, check out the “Worst Worship Ever ??” film clip @ the Monk; it’s a nine min. clip , but the first 90 sec. pretty much tells it all (no way I was going to endure the full 9 min., I’m stupid, just not THAT stupid).
Ping back. some of the comments are kinda funny, BTW: mine is just after a Headless Unicorn Guy comment.
Lord help us all thru ‘hump day’.
your friend in the ev. wilderness (which is growing by the day, methinks) GREG R
All I can say is that I laughed…. VERY VERY HARD! “slinging socks in the spirit!” “raise your sock up in the aier and waive it like you just don’t caier!” yes… I agree it is silly on so many levels… Ok I will shut up now.
VERY interesting thread on homosexuality, within and without the church, and how christians are to respond over @ , where else, I-Monk’s. Marin’s book is def. on my ‘to read’ list.
grace, peace, and superlative grilled food be lavished upon thee
Greg R
OK the homosexuality thing has been a hard one for me to parse through… I absolutely have no idea how to deal with this subject other than give lots of grace. in the same token, Paul gave some great instructions on dealing with those who refuse to repent of their bad behavior. while I always err on the side of grace…how do we manage the slippery slope of “tolerance”?

great new thread on atheism over at I-Monk today; check that out….when you’re not busy waving your sock over your head that is.
peace upon your bald head
Greg R
well, the MONK shut down the atheist thread after a meager 286 posts, and I think he got that in a single day !!!! or less than a full day, really. I was skimming some of the posts, it was getting uber-snarky, so I guess that’s why the moderation. I’ll reread some of the comments later and fly past the ‘geniuses-out-to-save-the-world”, and there seemed to be those on both sides of the aisle.
check out the Marylin Manson thing and post an ad, you could rock at this….JAY-SON…..JAY-SON…….yeah…yeah…
get ya some grace, man
