The Art of The Amble

// October 24th, 2008 // My Thoughts

The interesting thing about being a modern christian is that there are so many “methods” to understand what it is to be a “Christian” .   Book after book is written about being “purpose driven”, “wild at heart” “barbarian..” … you get the idea!

I love these books but they are entirely one dimensional! The problem with modern day christians is that we have absolutely no idea how to apply anything that we believe.. we blunder along applying all of the neat tricks that everyone else figures out and we wonder why after borrowing all of those “secrets to success” that we are still no closer to God.
You see,  having a direction, purpose, and even goals, is a great thing.. really!  but the real gold is in all of the little side jaunts that you take as you move towards your goal.  I mean think of it!
I like to think of it as an “amble”  walking in a general direction but purposely taking an enjoyable indirect route to get there.
I am not talking about living in the flesh and fulfilling your desires!  I am talking about taking time to stop and get involved in peoples lives,  being purposeful but also being natural and enjoying the opportunities that make our lives full!
Someone once said “life is what happens while you are making plans” Isn’t it true?
The reality is that Jesus was a distracted guy! he was supposed to save the world and he was always walking around talking to people, eating at other peoples houses and healing people! what if he acted like his only goal was to sacrifice his life on the cross!?
I encourage you to learn the “Art of The Amble”  Slow down!!  take a jaunt into some unfamiliar territory… take your time and notice what is around you.. there are all kinds of interesting people and situations that God is waiting to get involved in!  all you have to do is “amble” over and put your hand to it!
