Politics…
// October 16th, 2008 // My Life
almost everyone is really worked up about our soon to be next president… this year is all about history!… I have always avoided serious politics because of a conflict of interest. there is one very serious conflict that really bothers me.
Most christians I know are very staunch supporters of the politicians with “values” they are extremely supportive of new laws that support a “christian” world view and attempt to liberally apply their morality to the laws that govern our lives.
MY problem is that I don’t expect the “world” (the masses of un-saved) to act like christians. I expect them to act like people that are lost- (as in hey! where’s the map!)
anyways…. My struggle is that God has never insisted that ANYONE!!! act like a “christian” or even civilized!
so… why would christians… attempt to force their morality on people that God himself has not asked this of?
the result … in my opinion has been only increased hostility to christians… a very unproductive method of gaining new believers!
I know and fully expect to be flamed after this post… But I see lots of christians being politically active and spiritually inactive! if they would throw their energy into the relationships around them. the result would far exceed what they can accomplish politically.
I find it absolutely frustrating that many christians have done such a great job at becoming the very Pharisees that Jesus shook his finger at over and over!
The whole concept of christianity – of accepting Jesus- is completely based on free will. How can you say that you represent christianity if you deny someone the rights that God does not deny them?? ( to be as evil as they choose)
Now I am not so naive as to believe that government will not make some decisions that will legislate morality, it is a necessity for the world to work. But to even assume that America is a “christian” nation anymore thus the legislation of morality is necessary, is the very definition of naivete!
OK it is 1 am and I could rant for a while but need the sleep. More on this later… Hey! who knows I may disagree with myself in the morning…

I guess I can see where you are coming from, but in the same respect, when I speak to so-called “Christians”, I can’t imagine they put the worlds economy above their moral values. After all, that’s what separates Christians from the rest of the world. We (Christians) are to place God above all else. He even tells us if we put Him first, he will supply ALL our needs – including the economic needs. We all have free will, but it almost angers me when I hear professing christians say that the economic problems in our world should take a higher priority then a living sole. I guess I shouldn’t assume too much from any human being, but if I am choosing to call myself a Christian (yet a fallible human), I should still try to not be such a hypocrite and live up to what I choose to label myself.
I think the hardest thing for people to realize is that putting God first is an individual relationship scenario not a group initiative. The one thing that many Christians often run into is that their religion runs out once you run up against the real situations… they will yammer on all their lives that life starts at conception, and they will condemn abortion but what happens if your wife has a tubal pregnancy? all the sudden all options are on the table and saving your wife makes perfect sense!? That is why on political issues I constantly have to remind myself that a biblical worldview does not require me to require others to make the same choices that I presuppose that I would make in a totally hypothetical situation! Of course we all know what is good and right and we always want to do those things… I think there are precious few people on this earth that truly want to make bad choices and be evil. Most of us want to do the right thing but in the moment have no idea what that looks like…or selfishness takes control… thus the need for grace. I would have to say that in matters of government, and politics if I were to have opinions I would have to look at things from a utilitarian standpoint. what is best for everybody. I do admit utilitarianism is a slippery slope… but if you apply “love the Lord God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself” to a utilitarian perspective. I think that you could make some pretty sound decisions that maintain individual choice and freedom and still promote order.
